The Boy Who Climbed The Shard

4Studio / Channel 4

In July 2019, George King-Thompson, a nineteen year old urban free climber from Oxfordshire, made headlines around the world when he climbed Britain’s tallest building, The Shard – without a permit and without any ropes. Ever since he first saw the iconic building on a school trip to London, George was determined to climb it one day. Little did he know that he’d end up in prison – serving a six month sentence in the notorious HMP Pentonville. The Boy Who Climbed The Shard tells the gripping story of George’s climb, combining interview, UGC, observational documentary footage and innovative use of animation.

Commissioned by Channel 4’s digital unit, 4Studio, the films were released across YouTube and Facebook in November 2020, reaching over 5 million organic views within 10 days of release.

Winner of Best Short Form Documentary at the Broadcast Digital Awards 2021
